General description
The Contrast lamp consist of 10 shades. Each shade has four different surfaces: painted in white, blue and red and one polished. The bulb is placed in the center of the lamp centered and is adjustable vertical. The metal part in the top of the lamp is to adjust the bulb in uo and down. The lamp was unusual complicated to produce. The painting and coats of varnish alone, took about 130 applications on each lamp; each of the ten shades had six areas, which in pairs had to be processed seperate.
Poul Henningsen excused in 'LP Nyt' (translated Louis Poulsen News), 1962:"By the way is this construction, I have dreamed of in many years, becomed extremely expensive. The gross price is 735 good Danish crones. Measured in other values it is a fourth of a silver wedding (and then you have to reconsider the wine). I do not have the means to get this price reduced, so we have to categorize the whole lamp as quality of work". (from the book "Tænd" PH lampens historie).
